RIPARIAN

  • “The term "extended technique" is most commonly used to describe instrumental actions that extend beyond the saxophone's commonly practiced techniques. However, the term "extended technique" can become a double-edged sword. It implies an "otherness," even a barrier, to sounds that are unique and beautiful to the saxophone. Perhaps we can reframe the term "extended technique." Rather than extend our technical abilities, perhaps there is a chance to extend our ability to communicate and express the depths and nuances of human experience.

We find new avenues of expression when we embrace these sounds. A solitary wind instrument becomes a symphony of timbre and texture, a sonic machine shop, a percussion instrument, a lush garden of chaotic sound. We find a saxophonic vernacular that extends the possibilities of expression and connection. However, there is often a gap when approaching compositions that feature these sounds. It is a gap that is felt both by upcoming saxophonists and audience members.

In Riparian, Dr. Shawna Pennock not only makes a virtuosic and artistic statement in her performance, but also bridges a commonly overlooked gap in saxophone pedagogy. This is far beyond technical demonstration. Riparian embraces the saxophonic language and provides artistically strong points of entry to the vernacular. This is an album I wish I could have heard as a young saxophonist, and I am positive that it will inspire so many upcoming artists to investigate all that the saxophone has to offer. “

  • Pennock creates a beautiful atmosphere with her sensitive, lyrical and evocative playing . Pennock has this uncanny ability for blending her sound with other instruments as evidenced in the menacing and adventurous composition "Ricochet" by Al Theisen where her tone fits effortlessly within the piano and in Kathryn Jone's (Koopman) composition "Riparian" where the combination of alto sax and violin tremolos creates a beautiful and haunting atmosphere.

In the second movement of "Fledgelings, II. Alone in the Winter." I felt drawn into the contemplative feelings and images of solitude. "Alone in the Winter" creates a mysterious atmosphere of high piano sparkle reminiscent of a slow and silent snowfall paired with the distant breeze of multiphonics. All of the compositions successfully resonated with the titles of the pieces. Each track is a wonderful contrast to the track before.

It was also impressive to hear Pennock perform her own composition "Dolphin Catches Stingray", an unaccompanied baritone sax piece, I heard delightful and playful images brought to life through a dazzling display of extended techniques. I could imagine a dolphin flapping around as it catches the Prius-sized, slow stingray, and it brought back memories of witnessing those giant beasts up close while snorkeling.

This is a wonderful album of contemporary saxophone music and I happily recommend!
